Chemical Reactions and Soot Build-Up in a Diesel Filter

In this tutorial, a filter system for a diesel engine is modeled, including where a soot layer builds up and is oxidized. The build-up of the layer is held in check by both catalytic and non-catalytic reactions, where carbon is oxidized to carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, which in turn passes through the membrane. A filter system's efficiency and durability is closely related to the manner ...

Journal Bearing

Journal bearings are used to carry radial loads, for example, to support a rotating shaft. A simple journal bearing consists of two rigid cylinders. The outer cylinder (bearing) wraps the inner rotating journal (shaft). The new thin-film flow user interfaces of the CFD Module enables lubrication analysis and full elastohydrodynamic simulations. This example shows the pressure distribution in ...

Modeling of Wires, Surfaces, and Solids with Boundary-Element-Based Electrostatics

These examples demonstrate using the *Electrostatics, Boundary Elements* interface, introduced in version 5.3 of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. In the blog post associated with these files, "[How to Create Electrostatics Models with Wires, Surfaces, and Solids](/blogs/how-to-create-electrostatics-models-with-wires-surfaces-and-solids/)", we demonstrate the pros and cons of using the boundary ...

Convective Cooling of a Potcore Inductor

The inductor is a common component in a variety of electrical devices. Its applications include power transformation and measurements, and it can also be used together with capacitors to create oscillators. In small devices with many components, such as in laptops, heat generation can be a problem and must be accounted for in the design. This axi-symmetric model studies the heat transfer in ...

Spring Loaded Centrifugal Governor

A centrifugal governor is used to control the speed of rotating machinery. One of the most common applications is in controlling the RPM of an engine by regulating the fuel supply. This model illustrates the functioning of a spring loaded centrifugal governor. The dynamics of the governor are analyzed under the influence of a centrifugal force, spring force, and damping force. The sleeve ...

Jet Pipe

This example models the radiation of fan noise from the annular duct of a turbofan aeroengine. When the jet stream exits the duct, a vortex sheet appears along the extension of the duct wall due to the surrounding air moving at a lower speed. The near field on both sides of the vortex sheet is calculated. The linearized Potential Flow physics interface in the Acoustics Module describes acoustic ...

Edge Effects In a Spirally Wound Lithium-Ion Battery

Due to the large differences in length scales in a lithium-ion battery, with the thickness of the different layers typically being several orders of magnitude smaller than the extension in the sheet direction, a lithium-ion battery is often well represented by a one-dimensional model. However, the packing and stacking of the battery may cause edge effects which motivate modeling in higher ...

Vdara® Caustic Surface

When the Vdara hotel first opened in Las Vegas, visitors relaxing by the pool would experience intense periods of heat at certain times of the day, at certain times of the year. This intense heat was caused by the reflection of solar radiation from the curved, reflective surface on the South-facing side of the hotel. This model shows how a caustic surface is generated in the pool area around the ...

Energy Conservation with Thermoviscous Acoustics

This small tutorial model studies energy conservation in a small conceptual test setup. The model has an inlet and outlet and a Helmholtz resonator with a very narrow neck. The acoustics in the narrow neck are modeled with Thermoviscous Acoustic for a detailed analysis of the thermal and viscous losses. In order to study and verify energy conservation, the model compares the total dissipated ...

Monopile with Dissolving Sacrificial Anodes

A monopile foundation is a large-diameter structural element that can be used to support structures like offshore wind turbines. This application exemplifies how the cathodic protection of a monopile decreases over time as the sacrificial anodes dissolve. The model can be used to evaluate secondary current distribution electrode kinetics on the protected steel structure by taking into account ...
